Coordinates: 46°N 25°E / 46°N 25°E / 46; 25
Romania (
i/roʊˈmeɪniə/ roh-MAY-nee-ə; Romanian: România [romɨˈni.a]) is a unitary semi-presidential republic located in Southeastern Europe, bordering the Black Sea, between Bulgaria and Ukraine. It also borders Hungary, Serbia, and Moldova. It covers 238,391 square kilometres (92,043 sq mi) and has a temperate-continental climate. With its 19.94 million inhabitants, it is the seventh most populous member state of the European Union. Its capital and largest city, Bucharest, is the sixth largest city in the EU.
The River Danube, which is Europe's second longest river after the Volga, rises in Germany and flows southeastwards for a distance of 2,857 km, coursing through ten countries before emptying in Romania's Danube Delta. Some of its 1,075 km length bordering the country drains the whole of it. The Carpathian Mountains, with their tallest peak Moldoveanu at 2,544 m (8,346 ft), cross Romania from the north to the southwest.
Modern Romania emerged within the territories of the ancient Roman province of Dacia, and was formed in 1859 through a personal union of the Danubian Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia. The new state, officially named Romania since 1866, gained independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1877. At the end of World War I, Transylvania, Bukovina and Bessarabia united with the sovereign Kingdom of Romania. During World War II, Romania was an ally of Nazi Germany against the Soviet Union, fighting side by side with the Wehrmacht until 1944, then it joined the Allied powers after being occupied by the Red Army forces. During the war, Romania lost several territories, of which Northern Transylvania was regained after the war. Following the war, Romania became a socialist republic and member of the Warsaw Pact. After the 1989 Revolution, Romania began a transition back towards democracy and a capitalist market economy.

Romanian wine
Romania is one of the world's largest wine producers and sixth largest among European countries – in 2015 it produced around 4.069 million hectolitres of wine. In recent years, Romania has attracted many European business people and wine buyers, due to the affordable prices of both vineyards and wines compared to other wine producing nations such as France, Germany, and Italy.
In Romania are mainly cultivated grape varieties for white wines, the most widespread being Fetească Albă, Fetească Regală, Riesling, Aligoté, Sauvignon, Muscat, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Tămâioasă Românească, Grasă de Cotnari, Galbenă de Odobești. Therewith, the main grape varieties for red wines are Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Băbească Neagră, Fetească Neagră, Pinot Noir, Busuioacă de Bohotin.
History
Romania has one of the oldest wine making traditions in the world, its viticulture dating back more than 6,000 years. Due to the hot dry summers, the location proved to be successful and the grape vineyards thrived. Since the medieval times, wine has been the traditional alcoholic beverage of the Romanians.

Romania, Village Life in Transylvania
A beautiful little documentary of village life in Gyimes, in the South Eastern Carpathians in 2018. Ancient, vernacular, small farm-houses line the stoned side roads on which horse-drawn vehicles carry logs, hay, stone and people this way and that all day long. Most people live by small-scale farming producing their own honey, cheese, bread, veg and fruit, milk and meat. Water is always from the well, pure, sparkling and cold. Cows and sheep wear bells and high above the village the mountain meadows hum with insect life while the extraordinarily rich flora remains untouched by sprays and chemicals. Szekler people, Romania's Hungarian speaking minority live in Gyimes, which now lies within Bacau county. The history of the area and its association with Transylvania, is very complicated .......

Many times on the roads, I passed by old horse drawn wooden carts. They were everywhere. I saw dozens lined up off the road and stopped to see what they were doing. It was a farmers market catering to their specific livelihood. I took some photos and film of their activities. There was every sort of domesticated animal for sale there. The freshly milked cheese from the grass-fed sheep is curdled with natural rennet, then the curds are kneaded and gathered in a cheesecloth to remove the excess whey. Leaving Romania from a vacation where I helped volunteering at a bear sanctuary, I stopped by a traditional farmers market outside of a citadel called Cetatea RUPEA. It was a farmers market catering to their specific livelihood. I took some photos and film of their activities.
There was every sort of domesticated animal for sale there. Horses, pigs, cattle, sheepdogs, and food. Everything was traditional to the handmade whips to the dog collars, food and wooden carts. I did buy a couple of whips and some sheepdog collars. I am using one of the collars for my Saint Bernard. She's wearing it today. It's heavy duty and was only $12.00; designed for lifelong wear around the necks of sheepdogs in the Carpathian Mountains of the Balkans.
I missed filming one of the more interesting events I saw there. They test the strengths of the horses that are used to pull the carts. People pile onto the cart. They put on the brakes to the tires and have a horse pull and drag the cart across the ground; skidding the tires. The horses that drag it the longest distance are preferred. They almost knocked people down when then they drug the cart into the crowd.
I also liked the old heritage looking woman in the scarf driving her big horse and cart through the crowd. She reminded me of the rugged individual; the American Pioneer woman that help make America. She had been doing this a long time; probably all her life.
Being born in the city, it was nice seeing the other side of life from a perspective of people living a semi-subsistence life. The cultural divide was refreshing to witness. There is a lot of respect from me for people who survive on the historic heritage. It takes guts, determination, and know how to live like this. Nothing is taken for granted.

A beautiful little documentary of village life in Gyimes, in the South Eastern Carpathians in 2018. Ancient, vernacular, small farm-houses line the stoned side roads on which horse-drawn vehicles carry logs, hay, stone and people this way and that all day long. Most people live by small-scale farming producing their own honey, cheese, bread, veg and fruit, milk and meat. Water is always from the well, pure, sparkling and cold. Cows and sheep wear bells and high above the village the mountain meadows hum with insect life while the extraordinarily rich flora remains untouched by sprays and chemicals.
Szekler people, Romania's Hungarian speaking minority live in Gyimes, which now lies within Bacau county. The history of the area and its association with Transylvania, is very complicated .... I am no historian and apologise for any errors I have made.

Leaving Romania from a vacation where I helped volunteering at a bear sanctuary, I stopped by a traditional farmers market outside of a citadel called Cetatea RUPEA. Many times on the roads, I passed by old horse drawn wooden carts. They were everywhere. I saw dozens lined up off the road and stopped to see what they were doing. It was a farmers market catering to their specific livelihood. I took some photos and film of their activities.
There was every sort of domesticated animal for sale there. Horses, pigs, cattle, sheepdogs, and food. Everything was traditional to the handmade whips to the dog collars, food and wooden carts. I did buy a couple of whips and some sheepdog collars. I am using one of the collars for my Saint Bernard. She's wearing it today. It's heavy duty and was only $12.00; designed for lifelong wear around the necks of sheepdogs in the Carpathian Mountains of the Balkans.
I missed filming one of the more interesting events I saw there. They test the strengths of the horses that are used to pull the carts. People pile onto the cart. They put on the brakes to the tires and have a horse pull and drag the cart across the ground; skidding the tires. The horses that drag it the longest distance are preferred. They almost knocked people down when then they drug the cart into the crowd.
I also liked the old heritage looking woman in the scarf driving her big horse and cart through the crowd. She reminded me of the rugged individual; the American Pioneer woman that help make America. She had been doing this a long time; probably all her life.
Being born in the city, it was nice seeing the other side of life from a perspective of people living a semi-subsistence life. The cultural divide was refreshing to witness. There is a lot of respect from me for people who survive on the historic heritage. It takes guts, determination, and know how to live like this. Nothing is taken for granted.

Romania is one of the few European countries where it is common for small-scale farmers to work in the field with horses instead of tractors.

The freshly milked cheese from the grass-fed sheep is curdled with natural rennet, then the curds are kneaded and gathered in a cheesecloth to remove the excess whey. Further on, to make the whey cheese, the whey is heated until cheese lumps begin to float on the surface.These are gathered in a cheesecloth and hung to drain. Romania (i/roʊˈmeɪniə/ roh-MAY-nee-ə; Romanian: România [romɨˈni.a]) is a unitary semi-presidential republic located in Southeastern Europe, bordering the Black Sea, between Bulgaria and Ukraine. It also borders Hungary, Serbia, and Moldova. It covers 238,391 square kilometres (92,043 sq mi) and has a temperate-continental climate. With its 19.94 million inhabitants, it is the seventh most populous member state of the European Union. Its capital and largest city, Bucharest, is the sixth largest city in the EU.
The River Danube, which is Europe's second longest river after the Volga, rises in Germany and flows southeastwards for a distance of 2,857 km, coursing through ten countries before emptying in Romania's Danube Delta. Some of its 1,075 km length bordering the country drains the whole of it. The Carpathian Mountains, with their tallest peak Moldoveanu at 2,544 m (8,346 ft), cross Romania from the north to the southwest.
Modern Romania emerged within the territories of the ancient Roman province of Dacia, and was formed in 1859 through a personal union of the Danubian Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia. The new state, officially named Romania since 1866, gained independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1877. At the end of World War I, Transylvania, Bukovina and Bessarabia united with the sovereign Kingdom of Romania. During World War II, Romania was an ally of Nazi Germany against the Soviet Union, fighting side by side with the Wehrmacht until 1944, then it joined the Allied powers after being occupied by the Red Army forces. During the war, Romania lost several territories, of which Northern Transylvania was regained after the war. Following the war, Romania became a socialist republic and member of the Warsaw Pact. After the 1989 Revolution, Romania began a transition back towards democracy and a capitalist market economy.
